Researchers are unlocking the key to happiness. At least in sports!

Researcheres analyzed Olympians from 1992 to 2016 and concluded that bronze medalists are happier than silver medalists.

One of the potential reasons is that bronze medalists might compare their medal to no medal at all, while silver medalists compare theirs to gold.

So it could come down to status.

Silver medalists are equally one spot away from gold and bronze, and they'd gain much more status moving up to gold than down to bronze.

On the other hand, bronze medalists have more to lose than gain.
Moving up to silver? You're still not winning. But moving down? That's no medal at all!

And the closer silver medalists come to savoring victory, the less happy they become. And this isn't exclusive to Olympians.

You might have experienced this at the airport. Studies have found that people who miss their flight by five minutes are more upset that those who missed it by 30, even though both just missed a flight.

So to be a little bit happier when we fail, we just need to fail a little worse!
